Elena Rybakina snubbed by French Open media after she refused to answer similar question
Elena Rybakina secured a dominant win against unseeded Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus 6-3, 6-4. However, there were more headlines regarding her off the court than her performance.
The former Wimbledon champion was denied a post-match conference after her second-round win. According to the Express, she complained about some of the questions in her last press conference.
A press conference requires at least one journalist to be present in the room. However, not one journalist requested a question. Nonetheless, Rybakina did appear to speak on two TV channels. She talked about her second-set comeback, where she won the last four games to secure victory.
When I'm down, nobody wants to play three sets! Today I was 2-4 down so I was trying to play point by point and push myself. Energy-wise I was not that happy today with myself. With a lefty I'm trying to cover the white sides of the court and in the end I'm also focusing on myself a lot, trying to push myself. Today was a little bit ups and downs and a lot of times I was 0-40 down which I would say is not that usual for me. Of course she's an experienced player and it's not easy to play against her.Elena Rybakina said
Rybakina came into this year’s Roland Garros after withdrawing from the Italian Open. Her last tournament before the clay slam was the Madrid Masters, where she made it to the semi-finals but lost in a close match to Aryna Sabalenka.
Elena Rybakina secured a comfortable win over Arantxa Rus in Roland Garros second round
On Thursday in Paris, fourth seed Elena Rybakina advanced to the third round of the French Open with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Arantxa Rus from the Netherlands.
Despite a shaky start that included a double fault, the former Wimbledon champion quickly found her rhythm, successfully holding serve in the opening game on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. Once she got an early break, only one player was winning the first set.
The second set was extremely even in the beginning, with neither player giving an inch. However, it was Rus who made her move initially. The Dutchwoman cleaned up her game while Rybakina made some unforced errors, bringing the score to 4-2.
However, the good news for the 33-year-old was short-lived as the fourth seed broke back. At 4-4, Rybakina continued to pile on the pressure while her opponent wilted. She served out the match comfortably, winning the last four games. She will next play 25th seed Elise Mertens, who was impressive against Petra Martic.
