Dangerous strain of 'dog flu' coming for Idaho's canines

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - Dog flu has made its way across the west and into Idaho, CBS reports.

Elizabeth Peterson, the owner of Camp Bow Wow in Meridian, said that the virus can last on a surface for up to 48 hours; on clothes for up to 24 hours, and on unwashed hands for up to 12 hours.

She said when it hits the Treasure Valley, most dogs are likely to catch it. She said 20 percent of dogs who have the dog flu don't ever show signs.

"That's what's most scary," Peterson said. "That a dog can be running around and be shedding the virus and be giving it to other dogs and showing absolutely no signs."

Peterson said the typical signs include loss of appetite, fever, nasal and eye discharge and coughing.

*Camp Bow Wow hasn't seen a single case of the canine flu this season. The facility's owner weighed-in on how they keep their kennels clear of it, while keeping their dogs healthy.

If a dog starts showing symptoms while in care at Camp Bow Wow, Peterson said they will isolate them in rooms with their own air supply.

"We hope we don't see it. We hope not. But honestly, it's probably not a matter of 'if' but, when," she said.

KBOI 2News reached out the State Veterinarian's office and they said they are not able to confirm how many cases have entered Idaho, because vets are not required to report cases of dog flu.

Still, Peterson says it's important to have that conversation with a vet.

Scott Woolard, a dog owner, said he's not all that concerned about the virus getting to his dog, Pierre.

"He gets his shots," Woolard said. "He'll have some shots coming up in February and March. I'll make sure that if the veterinarian recommends the shot we'll get it."

Another dog owner said she had no idea there was such a thing as the dog flu.

"It's good to know especially since I take them to a place like the dog park," Crystal Carpenito said. "There was like 10 dogs in there today, so I definitely want to go get them vaccinated."

This virus is real and should be known. In the end, it's better to be safe than sorry. Man's best friend will be grateful for your caution.
